Are you noticing a change in the way your cheeks look? Have they started to sag or become stretched more than normal? Have they lost volume and thickness in the middle of the cheek? If you are experiencing age-related volume loss in the area of your cheeks, then you may be a candidate for Juvederm Voluma XC. This is a revolutionary dermal filler that can give you long-lasting, natural-looking results, and you can find it today at Jon Ric International Health and Wellness in Edmond, OK.
What Is Voluma Used for?
This dermal filler is specially formulated to address concerns with age-related volume loss in and around the cheeks. Because our cheeks show signs of aging differently, the filler has been designed to target three specific issues.
Correcting Loss of Volume in the “Apple” of the Cheek
The apple of the cheek area is known for conveying a sense of youthfulness and vitality. If you don’t know where the apple is, you can find it by looking in the mirror when you smile.
During a smile, that part of the upper cheek that forms the rounded area is known as the “apple.” Unfortunately, this area can start to lose some of its plumpness as we age. With an injection of filler, however, we can restore some of that volume in a way that looks incredibly natural.
Correcting a Disappearing Cheek Line
The cheek line or the “apex” of the cheek is another area that can suffer from a loss of definition. It can be a challenge to treat, but when we use this filler, we can subtly alter the shape of the cheek line, resulting in a sharp and attractive contour.
Correcting Loss of Volume in the Center of the Cheeks
The middle (or “hollow”) forms the largest area of the cheek. When you suck your cheeks in, you will notice that they form a dot in the center. This is where the hollow is, and usually, it contains some of the thickest skin on our faces.
However, when we age, the skin starts to thin out, and this is one of the most noticeable signs of aging. It can make us seem tired or worn out, even when this is not the case. By adding volume underneath the surface, we can wind up with a much fuller and more youthful appearance.
Why Is It Important to Use This Specific Filler?
Our cheeks contain some of the thickest skin on our faces, and because of this, not all dermal fillers are capable of producing quality results. Because this version of Juvederm has increased viscosity, it is able to withstand the challenges of treating the cheeks.
It is also capable of being injected more deeply and can last up to two years. Both of these make it ideal for addressing sagging or hollow cheeks.
What Is Juvederm?
Juvederm is the name of a product line of dermal fillers that are manufactured by Allergan, which also makes Botox. Juvederm works a little differently from Botox, however. Botox is a neurotoxin and relaxes the muscles in the face, and for this reason it is better at treating our frown lines than it is at treating our cheeks.
Juvederm, meanwhile, is a “hyaluronic acid filler”. This type of filler doesn’t relax muscles, but it does add volume under the skin by helping the skin retain water. The result is that the skin actually gains volume, which can soften wrinkles or address concerns like thinning cheeks.
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural chemical that is mostly found in the joints or in the skin. We are all born with it. The purpose of this chemical is to deliver nutrients to different areas of the body, lubricate our joints to prevent injury, and retain water. It is the last property––retaining water––that makes such a difference in our skin’s appearance.
When we age, we lose some of our hyaluronic acid, because the chemical naturally breaks down over time. The body does naturally replace it, just not as quickly as it loses it. This causes a slow and steady loss of moisture and hydration inside our skin, just under the surface, and the skin loses volume as a result. Wrinkles appear on the surface, and some areas start to look thin.
Can Anyone Get Treatment?
The different kinds of Juvederm are very effective at treating a wide range of ages and skin types. While most patients tend to be at least 35 years old, the filler can be used to treat volume loss in patients as young as 21.
The main exceptions are women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as anyone who has an allergy to lidocaine (a local anesthetic used in the filler). An allergy to the hyaluronic acid itself is nearly impossible, as this is a natural chemical that everyone already has. Any concerns or safety precautions will be addressed at a personal consultation that takes place before the treatment session itself.
How Quickly Will I See Results?
Results are seen right away. After the treatment session, the hyaluronic acid in the filler immediately begins to bind to the water that already exists in a patient’s skin. This means that the cheeks will appear fuller directly after an injection.
However, it is important to note that all versions of Juvederm do take roughly to weeks to “set” properly, which means that the initial appearance may change slightly at the filler settles. After two weeks, the final results will be visible.
How Long Do These Results Last?
Most versions of Juvederm last somewhere between a year and eighteen months. Voluma is an exceptionally long-lasting variety and can show positive results for up to two years after the initial injection. Hyaluronic acid does eventually break down, but because of the deep injection site and the makeup of the filler, it has a particularly long lifespan.
Most patients maintain their results by getting touch-up injections after the first one begins to fade. In many cases, less of the filler is needed in a second session.
What Should I Expect From Treatment?
There are several stages to the treatment process. These are basically the same, no matter what type of Juvederm you use or what parts of the face are being treated.
Your Personal Consultation
During a consultation with our medical staff, we will discuss your goals for the treatment and any questions you might have. We will also discuss your medical history and make sure that there are no safety issues that might get in the way of treatment. We will also give you information on how to prepare for the injection, although it is a minimally invasive process and much less complicated than a surgical procedure (like a facelift).
Preparing for Treatment
In the week before your treatment, it is advised that you avoid certain things. Aspirin and other blood-thinning medications must be avoided, as they can complicate the injection process. In addition, patients are advised to avoid the use of alcohol for 24 hours prior to their appointment.
The Injection Session
These injection sessions are extremely quick, typically lasting between 20 and 30 minutes, with minimal discomfort involved. Every effort is taken to ensure a quick and easy process.
Patients arriving at their appointment will be made comfortable and can relax during the injection. The presence of the anesthetic lidocaine helps reduce the discomfort. After the session, patients can return to their normal activities right away, and little to no downtime is needed.
For most people, the filler will take two weeks to settle. During the first few days after the session, we advise patients to avoid direct hot sunlight or very hot water. Tanning salons and very hot water should be avoided for a little while. In addition, patients should wait to get a massage, as this can complicate the filler’s “setting” process.
Once the filler has set, patients will be able to see a remarkable change in the treated areas. The apple of the cheek will appear naturally fuller, cheek lines will be sharper, and the hollow of the cheek will once again look full and supple.
What Else Can Juvederm Treat?
Many patients opt for a comprehensive treatment that addresses more than just their cheeks. Juvederm comes in many varieties, and each of these is designed to address a specific target area. At Jon Ric International Health and Wellness, we can use some of these other varieties as well as Voluma. Some of the treatment areas include:
Lines around the lips can often appear at a young age, making a patient look older than he or she actually is. There are a few different types of Juvederm that address this, typically lasting between a year and a year and a half.
These folds run from the lower corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They can be some of the most noticeable folds on the face and can become quite deep as we age. Juvederm can soften these lines and help make your cheek treatment look even better as a result.
The marionette lines are the lines that go from the mouth down to the chin. They are usually not as pronounced as nasolabial folds, but they can still make a patient feel self-conscious about his or her appearance. With Juvederm, these lines can be considerably softened so that they no longer appear nearly as deep.
Are There Other Options?
At Jon Ric International Health and Wellness, we carry a number of dermal fillers for the benefit and well-being of our patients. Some of them can be used to correct facial lines, thinning lips, and cheeks.
If you are specifically looking to change the appearance of your cheeks, either by contouring them or by adding volume, one possible alternative is Restylane Lyft. This is another hyaluronic acid filler that used to be known as Perlane-L.
Restylane Lyft is an excellent filler, and although it does not last as long as Juvederm Voluma, it is one we are proud to offer if a patient wishes to investigate other options.
